SEO and Small Changes

I’ve continued to make small changes in response to wonderful feedback I’ve received from a number of sources.  HN, Twitter, Facebook, and on this blog.  Most of the last update’s changes were aimed at SEO, and particularly Google.  I added a automatic sitemap generator, and intend to resubmit it to Google on a regular basis as recipes are uploaded.  I also altered the way titles are displayed to be more SEO friendly.  And I created a favicon.  Though not a terribly good one.

At some point I’m going to need the help of a real web designer.  But for now, my rather coarse attempts at design will have to suffice.   Working on ribbons now.  More to come on that later.

Well, I wouldn’t say that was Cake, but…

…it wasn’t bad at all. As you may have noticed, Fridge to Food beta 2 has been released.  It is now running on top of CakePHP and working wonderfully.  The rewrite took a little longer than I’d hoped, but all in all, a week and a half to completely redo 8 months of work is pretty spectacular.  I’m enjoying Cake.

There have been some added features and design remakes.  Also some lost features.  I dropped tag filtering from the main search for now.  It will soon return in an advanced search page – never fear.  I added view counts and ribbons.  There are only 5 ribbons you can gain right now, but there are many more to come!  Furthermore, there are lots of new ways to browse and an — I think — much improved browsing interface.  You can see only unphotographed recipes, or browse through photographs themselves as they get uploaded.  Also, the photo uploading interface has been much improved using Uploadify and JCrop :)   Great plugins those two!

All in all I’m very happy with the results.  Especially the design change that came after the initial release — the one where I moved the title and votes/comments/views bars to the top and bottom of the image respectively.  A huge shout out to @goingwithmygut and @labna on twitter who’s feedback inspired it.  That change was one of those things where, after I implemented it on the test server, neither Shel nor I could use the old Fridge to Food.  It was just too ugly by comparison!  Also a big shoutout to @RecipeTaster who’s excellent feedback lead to many small changes and tweaks.  Thanks guys!

Design Update

Updated the design of Fridge to Food.  Small updates, but I feel they make the site feel lighter, airier and more comfortable.  Also did a bunch of speed optimizations, some bug fixes and some SEO type stuff.  It’s steadily coming together.

In other news finals time are approaching and that should free up a fair amount of my time to work on it.  Should being the operative word there.  Who knows what will actually happen around here.

Many a Thing Added to the List

The update tonight included a lot of new features.

  • User Profile Browsing – You may browse through all user profiles by cookies or date joined.  From the profile you can see the recipes that user has posted.
  • Title Search – Title search has been added.  You may now search the recipes on Fridge to Food by title.
  • Recipe Delete – You may now delete recipes you posted by accident or double posted.
  • Image Delete – You may now delete images you previously posted when you have a better image.
  • Image Recrop – You can now recrop an image from the full image at any time.
  • New Icons and L&F stuff.

Also added were some bug fixes and stuff to make posting a recipe easier.  You are now asked if you really want to leave the posting page when you accidentally hit the back button.  And the validation checking is performed before posting, so you won’t lose the recipe if you’ve forgotten something.  Additionally, the double posting catch was updated somewhat.  It ought to be more effective.  Enjoy!

The Public Beta Begins

Brace yourself, the doors have been thrown open.  The public beta has begun!  Registration is working.  Many small bugs have been fixed and changes made per request.  Testing will continue through the open beta, and I’m sure more bugs will be found.

Currently on the known issues list: the suggestions box has problems in opera.

I’ll be working to fix that.

In the mean time, if you have any foodie, chef, cook or food photographer friends who you think would be interested in Fridge to Food – send em this way!
